The sales growth of non-assisted electric bicycles (including scooters) in China has exploded. The annual sales volume has increased from 56,000 units in 1998 to more than 21 million units in 2008. It is expected to reach 120 million units in early 2010 Vehicles. ] This boom was triggered by local Chinese government restrictions on motorcycles in the city center to avoid traffic jams and accidents. China is the world's leading manufacturer of electric bicycles, with an output of 22.2 million in 2009. Some of the largest electric bicycle manufacturers in the world are BYD and Geoby. Production is concentrated in five regions: Tianjin, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Shandong and Shanghai. In 2009, China exported 370,000 electric bicycles.
